A Kingdom Divided--An Inverted Exodus
Speaker: Nick Carruthers Series: 1 Kings: Faithful or Faithless? Passage: 1 Kings 12:1– 14:31
If you have turned on the TV lately, you have probably noticed that everything coming out is some sort of reboot or remake of a previous show or movie from the past. In a similar way, the Bible does have clear themes that are repeated throughout. One of the more prominent themes is that of exodus. In 1 Kings 12-14, we see a kind of upside down remake of the exodus story. Israel is the new Egypt. Israelite kings are acting like Pharaohs. If that wasn’t bad enough, golden calves are made and worshiped by the people of God. Israel has moved from their golden age into the beginning stages of a dark age. Sin and compromise abound, but still God’s grace and God’s sovereign hand are at work.
