Relational abandonment and divorce are all too common in our communities. A new normal has settled in and with it, cynicism about enduring love. It is tempting to think this is unique to western culture, but the same cynicism existed even in the religiously charged world of Jesus. Debates raged about which ‘loopholes’ in seeking divorces were legitimate. Into this fray came Jesus with a different story--a story that transcended the debate and called men and women to a glorious restoration of what was meant to be from the beginning. His ideal was incredibly challenging then and remains that way today. Thus, Jesus tackled other questions, providing direction, hope, healing, and forgiveness when marriages fail.
