Christians desperately want to be in the center of God’s will. Being in the center of His will yields power and purpose in our lives. Confident of His calling, we gain a bounce in our step, believing His blessing and favor is upon us. But what if we begin to confuse our social, religious, economic, or even marital status with that sense of blessing and confidence? What if we assume one condition or place in life is inherently more valuable than another? That’s exactly what was happening in Corinth to this community of young Christians. They were anxious to change their situations in the hopes of upgrading their spiritual status. The verses this week specifically speak to the condition of being single or married. What Paul says is as counter-cultural today as it was then.
