The Judgement to Come

Speaker: Mike Faler Series: The Gospel According to Matthew Passage: Matthew 11:20–24

1. There will be a judgment.

Matthew 12:36 NIV
But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.

Romans 14:10b,11 NIV
…. for we will all stand before God‘s judgment seat, it is written
As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before me, every tongue will acknowledge God. So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

Hebrews 9:27 NIV
Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment

Acts 17:30 NIV
….. but now God commands all people everywhere to repent

2. Jesus will be the judge.

John 5:22, 23a ESV
The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son. That all may honor the Son, just as the honor of the Father….

3. There will be different degrees of judgment.

Matthew 11:20- 24 NIV
Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[a] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

Ezekiel 16:49,50 NIV
Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

Revelation 20:11-15 NIV
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

4. The cross was a judgment.

2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV
God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

John 5:24 NIV
Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

2 Corinthians 5:10 NIV
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

Hebrews 6:10 NIV
God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
