The Controversial Jesus
Series: The Gospel According to Matthew Passage: Matthew 9:1–17
As a kind of foreshadowing of what is to come, we see at the end of Matthew 8, with the healing of the two demoniacs, that for the first time in Matthew's gospel a group of people aren't happy with Jesus or his ministry. As we come to the beginning of Chapter 9 we see that opposition to Jesus is growing, particularly with those in leadership. Jesus has disrupted the system and the old religious guard isn't happy about it. One by one, they begin to confront him. What does Jesus say or do that makes them so upset? How does he respond to their accusations? What is his justification for his actions?
