Generous Judgments
Speaker: Chris Martin Series: The Gospel According to Matthew Passage: Matthew 7:1–12
Generous Judgments
Matthew 7:1-12
Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive,
and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken
together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be
measured back to you.
Luke 6:37-38
Generous Judgments (vss. 1-5)
Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we
will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written,
“As I live, says the Lord, every
knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
” So then each of us will give an
account of himself to God.
Romans 14:10-12
Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or
judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you
are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to
save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
James 4:11-12
For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will
be measured to you.
Matthew 7:2
Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your
own eye? Or how can you say to your brother,
‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,
’ when
there is the log in your own eye?
Matthew 7:3-4
You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the
speck out of your brother's eye.
Matthew 7:5
An Exception (vs 6)
Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them
underfoot and turn to attack you.
Matthew 7:6
Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
Proverbs 9:8
Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words.
Proverbs 23:9
Generosity and Prayer (vss.7-11)
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For
everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be
opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks
for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask
him!
Matthew 7:7-11
Generosity and Healthy Relationships (vs 12)
So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the
Prophets.
Matthew 7:12
What is hateful to you, do not do to anyone else. This is the whole law, all the rest is only
commentary.
--Rabbi Hillel
It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. For
the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever.
Psalms 112:5-6
He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn
is exalted in honor. The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away;
the desire of the wicked will perish!
