The Genealogy of Jesus Christ
Series: The Gospel According to Matthew Passage: Matthew 1:1–17
Most authors, and even movie directors, know that if you want to capture the reader or the audience's attention you have to have a strong beginning. Whether it's something like an intriguing line or a shocking or intense scene, you have to get people to buy in. However, when we open our Bibles to the New Testament, and turn to Matthew Chapter 1, the opening line is, "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham." We are perhaps left scratching our heads. Yet when you understand what Matthew is doing and what he is saying, you quickly realize that this is an amazing way to start the "greatest story ever told."
