The Christians that first read the book of Revelation experienced or were about to experience great evil and injustice. The promise of Jesus’ return was a powerful elixir that rewired their view of the future--giving them hope in the worst of circumstances. It also gave them power to choose to live as Jesus did, and not repay evil for evil. Why? Because the strong and righteous Judge is returning. It is easy to despair when we experience slander or unfair treatment. It is tempting return the hurt with the same measure and tactics given to us. But more than personal resolve, it is our sure and solid hope that empowers us to live as Jesus did.
