From the very start of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus has been carefully hinting to us that it's the internal part of us, what we are like in our minds and hearts, that should define and direct our righteousness. In this week's verses, Jesus begins the first couple of illustrations of what this looks like and how it radically differs from what the Pharisees and scribes have been teaching, specifically for the issues of anger and lust.
