Samson is the last of the 12 judges we meet in the book of Judges. He is by far the worst of them all, and the nation of Israel itself is in a very scary place. They are on the verge of extinction, not by military conquest, but through assimilation. They have gotten so used to and so comfortable with their oppressors that they don’t even cry out to God for help this time. God, constrained by his own character and by his faithfulness, breaks the silence and sends an angel to announce to a barren woman that she will have a son who will “begin to save Israel from the Philistines.”
